Gamergate was responding to a perception of industry-wide scorn, not just one institution's ego. I'd also submit the social tensions involved were richer veins for disorder than intra-center elite sniping. (Also there are a fuckton of gamers, for real.)
I think I agree with you but I'm trying to figure out why gamergate went pandemic but this doesn't seem likely to do so. gaming journalism and the ugly side of teenage nerd culture seem like much narrower niches than political journalism and opinion.
