Sometimes, it's maybe a clue that something has been argued in bad faith before. E.g. try talking to an actual alt-righter, communist, buddhist (lol) or other ideologue on a contentious topic online. You'll be misrepresented, insulted and lied about. So you tap out.

You a buddhist or not, personally? Just asking so I know the context a bit better. The short answer is non-buddhist perspectives on elements of buddhist philosophy & ontology, especially as interpreted by westerners, but really just in general, are not often welcome.

personally I am a "bad" buddhist, if that means anything to you. I promise you that my question is not loaded and I'm not trying to argue with you or dispute anything. I'm just curious. I tend to be very very allergic to theological or ideological combat.

so what's the long answer?

Now that I know a bit more about you, I'll thread it: - I am a complete spiritual eclectic. I use theravada, zen, yoga-I-don't-fully-understand, western magick and philosophy interchangably. This pisses off certain buddhists, because I refuse to speak only their language.

- I think much of buddhist ontology, and much of the core philosophy of vajrayana and mahayana in particular, is deeply fucked and abusive, and this REALLY pisses off certain buddhists. I can understand why, but I don't particularly care.

- A lot of the things I say about spirituality or meditation are no doubt a bit stupid or silly, but buddhists in particular tend to respond with passive-aggressive comments or unfollowing, whereas others ten to either engage, ignore or go "don't be a moron", essentially.

- Lastly, if you ever talk to certain buddhists about anything related to the various attainments and states - jhanas, stream-entry, what have you - you open pandora's box. This is strongly, strongly hated by certain people.

That I've only ever had this experience with buddhists & people-who-don't-know-how-to-talk-about-politics, not people interested in philosophy, magick or yoga, vedantins and so on, colours how I choose to talk about it. That's it.

I understand you much more clearly now. Thank your for elaborating. Puritanism is an unfortunate fixture of the anglosphere and it has worked its way into buddhist communities as well as christian and secular/liberal ones.

Thanks for asking. It was good getting to talk about this to someone who wasn't already nodding along or instantly on the defensive, which are more or less the normal reactions. Forced me to be a bit more eloquent about it.

And also thank you
@_jordan_bates - for all that I often disagree with you completely, your threads prompt some interesting discussions.0 replies 0 retweets 1 like
