<thread> I have been rummaging around in 18th century France looking for the roots of the enlightenment. In the context of our current discussions about Free Speech and Due Process, I want to identify the enlightenment building blocks.

The Parisian enlightenment produced the West's first Cafe Hipster Culture. Their literary production leads us to accord them too much influence. I think we have to go back to the first experiments in toleration and free press in England and Holland to find the enlightenment

I think we are going to have to look into the "Reformed" Enlightenment of the 1600s if we want the "free speech" roots Unlike the French enlightenment, this one is tightly linked with Hermeticism, Boehme-ism and Christian Cabala see:https://books.google.com.vn/books?hl=en&lr=&id=HsuAAgAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PP1&dq=calvinist+enlightenment&ots=UPpnZcAlKB&sig=WoklM9f3eut-GUgQbPWeNXubZUM&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=calvinist%20enlightenment&f=false …

The basic Idea is that the English scientific revolution was rooted in earlier -science and occult hybrids with alchemy and fortune telling. The "Reformed" Lands were filled with this. Wizardry flourished. This was part of the foundation of English Empiricism

Scotland was another stronghold of the "Reformed" Church. It can be added to our list of "calvinist enlightenments"http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17496977.2015.1112136?journalCode=rihr20 …

The Scottish Enlightenment had a big impact on the American Enlightenment. Maybe it is here that we should be looking, rather than in Francepic.twitter.com/t4oEGlLhGS
