One of my unofficial internet mentors was thinking-out-loud earlier on how to integrate progressive and conservative tendencies in himself. This is something that's been on my mind a lot too. Maybe we're just similar, or maybe this is an indirect discourse.

I come from a very leftist background. Great Uncle Jim was a real actual member of the American Communist Party. Investigated by the McCarthy committee. Uncle Paul was a student activist in the 60s and his apartment was tossed by the feds more than once. Etc.

I watched Chomsky "Manufacturing Consent" with my dad as a tweenager. The first college I attended was Hampshire College, for the "radical, non-traditional" blah blah blah. I dropped out of Hampshire College btw. My alma mater is CCNY.

As I've aged (I'm 33 now) my sense of place in the political landscape has radically shifted. It's been quite disorienting and I feel like simultaneously I've had some dramatic internal changes as well as living through a dramatic external change.

In many respects I've apparently shifted rightwards, though this feels like an illusion. My core beliefs haven't shifted much at all but where those beliefs are mapped to in the present Overton Window on the political spectrum has shifted rightward.

The internal change that I do recognize is a much much much greater sense of humility and embrace of realism. This is predicted just by aging, among other things, but I may have accelerated it "old soul" levels due to some other internal shifts.

I've learned to respect and appreciate the viewpoints of those I disagree with on policy preferences. Part of my "awakening" (to use a loaded word) has been to escape the polarized dipole view which says my preferences are associated with good and the other guys are evil.

It doesn't mean that I will necessarily agree with their policy preferences. For example, I still strongly advocate for nationalized single-payer healthcare coverage (a democratic socialist position) but I don't think that right-libertarians are evil for disagreeing on that.

When I find substantive disagreement I've learned that my own perspective might have missed something important. This either helps me improve my own reasoning or (rarely) it will persuade me to change my mind. Being persuadable is a very important aspect of being "awakened" imo.

On the topic of conservatism I've come to accept that on a basic, important level I have a conservative disposition. This is EXTREMELY different than being politically conservative. It's a disposition. My natural take on the world is conservative. Cautious. Conscientious.

Conscientiousness and humility are actually important virtues and when they are forgotten or (worse) rejected then you're opening up yourself and anyone affected by your decisions to potential harm due to carelessness or recklessness.

The fatal flaw in most political progressivism is that it is prone to carelessness and recklessness. A lot of energy spent pursuing big ideas and big policies. Not so much energy spent on trying to understand second-order and unintended consequences.

As a digression, I find that political progressivism and consequentialist ethics are very strongly linked (liberal technocrats) in U.S. society. Consequentialist ethics is fatally flawed. We simply cannot know the full extent of the consequences of our actions. Life isn't a model

The fatal flaw in political conservatism is that it hesitates to act where action is needed. Related problem is hypocrisy. I mean that in the traditional sense of the word "insufficiently self-critical" not in the post-modern ironic sense of the word.

Conservative worldviews are often hypocritical. Often making light of the severity of real problems or (worse) defending systems of iniquity merely because they are stable.

There's a problem today though in that conservatism and radical right-wing revanchism are frequently conflated, and of course the right-wing ideologues in our government and media have done little to fight against this trend. No wonder people are shouting "NAZI NAZI" so freely.

There are radical left-wing revanchists too. They're actually even more terrifying to me because the right wingers won't pretend to be anything but tribally motivated, whereas the extreme leftists pretend they have some beautiful vision for the future. Jackbooted thugs.

Reconciling my leftist background and my leftist ideals with my conservative disposition and my acquired wisdom has been a bit of a personal project. It's not easy, let me tell you.

I'm not a policy think-tanker or an influential blogger. My intellectual output on this stuff is completely ignored by everyone but myself and the handful of people who talk about it with me. Instead, I focus my energy on learning how to orient myself based on what's in my heart.

For example: "how should I vote?" "who should I donate money to?" "who should I be reading?" "which communities should I attempt to engage with?" "how should I handle interpersonal interactions with people who disagree with me?" etc.

A lot of this is just filling in the details of the usual path work stuff. Right View. Right Speech. Right action. (contemplated using correct instead of right due to context, but the traditional translation is fine)

The polarization in society has become a major obstacle to effective communication about topics that deserve a language with sufficient nuance to reflect the underlying reality. I find it very hard to know how to discuss my politics with people. I have no label and no tribe.

I feel like I've personally innovated quite a bit, finding a middle path between idealist progressivism and realist conservatism. It works for me, even though it's very hard to communicate with people stuck in mainstream discourse boundaries.

          I'm not a centrist though. I'm a conservative progressive. That's not a contradiction.
