It's pretty much peak mid 90s trippy subversive Kaiju anime. Three girls become the "kings" of some obscure south pacific island, and it's guardian deity follows them back to Tokyo, where the military industrial complex reacts as expected.

IDK why ancient alien bio-mecha was so popular in the 90s. Evangelion was neither the first nor the last.
