I am confused by what people mean when they talk about centrism. Which of these comes closest to your view of what actual centrism means?

I think there are two competing notions that share the word "centrism" but should be distinguished. The first is preferring consensus-supported, moderate, nuanced positions. The second is something I've called "orthogonalism", preferring perspective shifts that reframe problems.

Orthogonalism can accidentally come to agree with moderate centrism, particularly in times of very high polarization. It's really about breaking out of orthodoxy though and viewing problems in a new light where the solution isn't intractable.
