I fear that far too many people use it straight-forwardly as an example of utilitarian or consequentialist ethical decision making. I hope I'm wrong and that this group is much smaller than I think it is.
subjectivity is volatile like rocket fuel, have to handle with care. when handled appropriately it results in insight, when handled recklessly it results in everything you know and love being engulfed in flames.

the variant where subjectivity vis a vis empathy is introduced to the problem tries to address. "suppose the 1 person is your <emotionally resonant class>", do you still pull the lever?

but it's still shit. except in the meta-sense that the self deconstructing problem is useful for building critical thinking skills. I just think this particular problem deconstructs too readily. it's a sweater with a loose thread hanging out.
