Read up on Gnosticism I guess. My only beef with it is it was invented by people who didn't have video games, and who thus assumed the simulation was Malicious.

it was a rhetorical question, I have indeed read up on gnosticism. I can think of a dozen answers from different systems off the top of my head and every one of them is unsatisfactory. nobody gets much further than noticing that the ego vanishes under examination.

I don't believe the ego vanishes. Elaborate?

I'm trying to decide how to answer and not do so in a way that satisfies my own humor or wit or sensibilities, but rather to answer in a way that will be useful for you. I don't know you though so I can't answer in any useful way until I know you a little bit better.

Do you meditate? If I link the text of a Zen koan will you find that helpful or irritating?

I do. I enjoy both the one about the robber and the moon and the one about one hand clapping.

Does the flag move, thus causing the mind to move, or does the flag in fact not exist at all? The mind flags. The mind winds. The mind's wind and mind's flag dance together.

Why can't the mind itself be the ego?

why can't the coffee be the mug? the ego is the the part that says I AM. most of your mind doesn't bother with that. you do most of your thinking perfectly happy to be ignorant of who "I" might be.

It doesn't have to say "I AM" to be part of an I. The foot doesn't know it's part of a body, but the hand will still keep a door from slamming on it. The mind is even more unified. When anything happens to a part, all other parts know right away.

By contrast, the hand will generally not keep a door from slamming on a doorjam. Does it hurt? How would you even know?
