I keep reading about incidents like this and every single time I'm left wondering "how did this go on for so long?" there are no outside observers in those classrooms? the students are all so troubled that the ones who see it for what it is are in the minority?

yeah, seems so. I'm just having trouble accepting that people are really like that, and yet. I've even met a few people like that (in both lefty SocJus cults and righty Bible thumper cults) and every single time I just walk away confused, and a little frightened.
