And of course if they move onto land, they will need land adapted platforms, which will have legs because those are just specialized tentacles.

Only humans will think bipedal robots are a good idea, because we build our spaces for bipedal life forms and associate height with authority.

A human built police mecha probably has really long legs, and a laser for killing hostile drones. It stands above crowds and makes the organics feel "safer" or at least less aggressive.

I'd imagine longer more flea like legs, a head/body mounted between them, and no arms. All weapons are body mounted.

Yes, if your goal is to intimidate/protect a formation of human sized infantry. Against armored vehicles it's a big soft target. Modern tanks with sloped armor are the most efficient way to armor a ground vehicle.

that particular example was probably purpose-built as a terror weapon because it was understood the opposing forces were technologically inferior. against more equal opponents I assume a similar war machine with a lower profile would be used.

though alternative defenses besides armor plates might make a lot of sense for the right type of culture, with the tech available. for example, hologram projection displacement. the walker appears to be 50 yards away from its real position.
