Intelligence explosion is bio-mechanical tentacle sex and nothing else. This is probably not energy or heat efficient, but nothing in anime ever is. Sorry, those giant robots with beam rifles would probably be tanks or VTOL gunships with big heat sinks.

Yes, if your goal is to intimidate/protect a formation of human sized infantry. Against armored vehicles it's a big soft target. Modern tanks with sloped armor are the most efficient way to armor a ground vehicle.
-
For watercraft and aircraft, you don't armor the whole vehicle, but rather just the most sensitive parts. Battleships have citadels, aircraft have self sealing fuel tanks and bulletproof windscreens. Other than that they are mostly thin sheet metal.

Any armored ground form progresses towards the evolutionary perfection of the horseshoe crab. A being that REALLY doesn't like being stepped on, but has few threats from below.
-
Since then most non aquatic life forms decided armor wasn't worth it. But humans want to protect their war machines, so they end up making metal trilobites with turrets, and living in constant fear of landmines.

Octo-mecha would equip shields as arm attachments. rows of shield plates along the length of defensively designated tentacles, large hydrodyamically shaped round or kite shield (probably spiked) at the ends of the arms.
-
fundamental attack pattern of Octo-mecha is to use defensive tentacles to pin/block enemy weapons, EM disruptor and ink to blind enemies, and then critical strike the enemy command+control system with its penetration tentacles.
