Japanese cyberpunk is better than western cyberpunk because it understands the only way AI could possibly be a threat to humans is if it can make mechanical tentacles burst out of people's chests and turn them into cyber zombies.

In order for a cybernetic system to expand physically as fast as it does mentally, it will need some sort of nanotech or biomechanical ability to alter it's own hardware in real time. In Rojin Z the machine just re-purposes external hardware to expand it's capabilities.

Intelligence explosion is bio-mechanical tentacle sex and nothing else. This is probably not energy or heat efficient, but nothing in anime ever is. Sorry, those giant robots with beam rifles would probably be tanks or VTOL gunships with big heat sinks.

I feel like there's a great thread to be had here talking about the how's and why's of humanoid mecha vs. other advanced weapon platforms.

A being that's just legs and swords might make sense if you've never invented firearms. Making use of muscle power and super hard blades to penetrate armor.

beam and projectile weapons will be TERRIBLE in deep water. it's gotta be swords and spears down there.

And of course if they move onto land, they will need land adapted platforms, which will have legs because those are just specialized tentacles.

Only humans will think bipedal robots are a good idea, because we build our spaces for bipedal life forms and associate height with authority.

A human built police mecha probably has really long legs, and a laser for killing hostile drones. It stands above crowds and makes the organics feel "safer" or at least less aggressive.

It can provide fire support to a squad of humans in powered armor, or lift them to allow them to access higher floors of buildings in emergencies.

A human might be able to ride it, but really that just makes the human an easier target. An AI core is easier to armor than a cockpit.

More likely a human could ride on the outside of the walker in non combat situations, and dismount when it's time to fight. The humans's job is to shoot human sized targets on the ground. Everything else is targets for vehicle mounted lasers and railguns.
