Judge Dredd is an archonic nightmare. He represents the ultimate degeneration of law enforcement into pure violence. "Everything is illegal" is another way of stating "there is no such thing as the law". Dredd's statement is ironic and tragic.
the 2nd amendment is the anti-warlordism clause of the constitution. it's the answer to who watches the watchmen.

but there are still reasons we want due process and specialized law enforcement professionals.
-
Due process can happen after the shots are fired, and specialized law enforcement professionals are the definition of warlord.

Yeah, that's what I've been proposing from the start. I'm just saying things like due process and specialization will require people with the responsibility to train specialists and observe process is being followed.
-
Again, the Marshal isn't somebody with any special authority, just the responsibility to make sure process is being followed. The violence is done by citizens. The marshal is elected by the same citizens.
-
mob violence though. what happens when the marshall tells an enraged group of citizens "no folks, you are not allowed to use violence in this circumstance"?
-
Then they won't listen to him, and democracy happens. Lynch mobs are the most democratic thing ever. If the marshal wants to prevent this, he'll take the fugitive into protective custody. This isn't locking him up, this is escorting him out of town.
-
alright then look, if you're trying to convince me that the system you're proposing is a good one it really loses a lot of credibility when you argue yourself into the corner of "lynch mobs are ok:.
-
I never said they were okay, only that they were a natural result of democracy and that we need to be more accepting of the realities of mob psychology if we are going to be free.
-
You have been continually misrepresenting by claims all night. I'm not really sure I consider you somebody who deserves convincing anymore.
-
alright, sorry. I understand that it's hard to express your beliefs and maybe I was too critical. I think we fundamentally agree on the importance of reducing authoritarianism, and that the incarceration system is mostly awful. I think we disagree about how policing should work
