What's the point of building a death star when you can just do a hyper-relativistic space 9/11?

the entire point of the Death Star was that it was a gratuitous display of military resources. Nudging asteroids into collision paths with planets is cheap. Anyone can do that. Building an outrageously expensive battlestation shows power.

war in the star wars universe would be entirely different if relativistic kinetic weapons were used. It was just jarring to have them show up this late in the game

ok, so let's focus some more on why the Death Star is the Death Star. Beyond just being an ostentatious display of industrial capacity it's also _not really_ an anti-planet weapon. It can do that but it's obviously inefficient compared to the alternatives.

the super laser is really an anti-ship weapon, as seen in RotJ with DS2. the fact that they could overtune it if desired to be used as a terror weapon is kinda secondary to its design. Tarkin doctrine was considered controversial and probably a mistake, right?

there seems to have been a very long-standing norm of limited warfare throughout the galaxy. a shift in that norm IS jarring, and perhaps that's exactly the point.
