Afghanistan was ruled by a radical Sunni faction (Taliban). Saddam's Iraq was nominally secular but dominated by a Sunni faction (which was a minority within Iraq's borders). ISIS is nominally a Sunni organization.

What we have, presently, is an alliance with KSA (Sunni extremist) and a cold war with Iran (Shia extremist). The reasons for our alliance are geopolitical and historical, and not at all sectarian or theological.

Cool, I mean in the sense that you're giving me info that I didn't know about, not cool about our forever war. I'm better with belief systems than politics. I saw the map and was like Hey! But saw an incorrect pattern

Glad I could provide some useful information. The forever war is infinitely sad :( (Though the Haldeman book is a good read, but that's a tangent).
