he was perpetually in counter-cultural mode. a professional discontent. anything he recorded has to be taken with that context.

and the same is true of culture. work in your subculture to make it good. terminate your relationship with bad culture.

his culture is not your friend rant is more of a "ra ra!" type thing instead of something to think deeply about IMHO

that's why I find it offputting. it's thought terminating, and the audience reaction is creepy.
