I am still searching for an appropriate term for this place, and for a reliable way out of it
20 more years of accelerating towards the new dominant multiculture has made this stuff not age very well, I guess.

yeah, I'm not blaming him (and others of his era) for thinking the way that they did at the time. it just seems naive today.

but I think the core insight holds: culture is totalizing, even multiculture. if you don't want to be eaten by it, it's not your friend.
-
I disagree with this though. consider the individual as a microcosm. each relationship threatens to eat you.
-
does this imply that you should avoid relationships?
-
I think reach relationship DOES threaten to eat you and that the amount of misery experienced by bad relationships is evidence of this.
-
it doesn't imply you should avoid relationships. it implies that you should put in work to have good relationships and terminate bad ones
-
and the same is true of culture. work in your subculture to make it good. terminate your relationship with bad culture.
-
that I agree with, but it's a very different from the "culture is not your friend" statement and the sermon that goes along with it
-
his culture is not your friend rant is more of a "ra ra!" type thing instead of something to think deeply about IMHO
