Is the assumption that we treat people badly primarily because we're unhappy? What metrics are we using to measure how people are treated?

On the first point, at least, I honestly assumed your statement might have been informed by social psychology research. No offense intended.
Perhaps too many of us still build ourselves up by tearing others down. Thus, we believe ourselves happier because we're ripping on others.
