Understanding and empathy for dangerous people is one thing, and often brave. Conveniently explaining away all despicable behaviour as illness, well, that's cowardly.

believing harmful things (and eventually acting on them) is not mental illness. unfortunately it's solidly within the realm of normal, high-functioning, behavior and it's incredibly common.
