lobotomy is a famous case of this, and you've probably also heard of electroshock therapy (a variant of which is still used sometimes), but have you heard about Insulin Coma Therapy? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin_shock_therapy …

"...A study at the time claimed that many of the cases of brain damage were actually therapeutic improvement because they showed "loss of tension and hostility". Mortality risk estimates varied from about one percent to 4.9 percent."

At least lobotomies do something. Orthomolecular medicine does jack shit. Just spurious correlations.
-
well, the molecules _do_ something, we're just not 100% positive what the psychological impact of that something is supposed to be.
-
I haven't read the article but I presume it's in the genere of orthomolecular medicine, meaning that the concentrations would be too low (as far as we know) to have any observable effect in humans. The effects of lithium in higher doses are pretty well understood.
-
this microdosing trend is really taking off huh
-
Been popular for a while but under the name "homeopathy."
-
that's more like nanodosing. i'm skeptical that there is much clinical benefit to e.g. LSD microdosing, but a 25 microgram dose is probably not completely without effect.

There is a bit more to it than this. We shouldn't confuse low levels with the massive doses given in bipolar. There are genuine benefits to health and lifespan in living in districts with higher natural lithium levels, studies reproduced in different parts of world
