Txt from a friend at university "I keep getting emails from the department about guest speakers talking about "sustainability" and other environmental fantasies. It's depressing watching all these scientists grasping at straws as if we have any chance of these things working."

What do you think? Is "sustainability" a white lie we tell to comfort ourselves? Is a Western lifestyle fundamentally unsustainable at scale? Or is sustainability attainable?

Makes perfect sense. So instead of being pessimistic, and getting the flu shot, you prefer to be optimistic and die as a result.

optimists get flu shots, they're the ones that believe interventions can be successful. pessimists accept that suffering is inevitable and skip it.
