probably like most people, I first heard the name 'guan yin' (觀音, "observe sound") as part of the famous and excellent oolong tea sometimes translated as "iron goddess of mercy". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tieguanyin

I've come across the many-armed and many-faced versions in those countries as well, though they are less common (sometimes a temple would have a large statue using the now standard depiction, and a smaller many-armed version somewhere off to the side)
