One characteristic of frauds is a tendency to speak authoritatively on matters outside their area of expertise. Only someone who doesn't understand climate feedbacks believes it can be "managed" by putting smart dudes "in charge".pic.twitter.com/6ur8UI180l

The cascades are gonna hit us for centuries either way, no? No avoiding that. Not big on the authority model, either, but I do see the merit of engineering practical solutions. Personal characteristics, well... that's another story.

Obviate major sources of pollution, for one thing. Pretty high percentage of this that is just down to embedded corruption, but I don't know that we have time for a revolution. That's issue nr. 1. The important missing link is that we have a lot of issues of tech suppression.

If we're only getting the right tech when certain cartels feel like making money off it, that's going to kill us. What's your model for what to do (or not do)?

There is also pretty clear second-order effects of any sort of ecological collapse: Bunch of technical debt going to be paid for in full, and a lot of need for new solutions for all kinds of current tech. Those are almost certainly engineering problems + (very) local politics.

While climate scientists are almost certainly right about a lot of the bigger picture stuff, a lot of models will be inadequate with this amount of cascades. Another engineering problem. (Again, I think the God-Emperor Musk stuff is garbage. But we'll have to face this.)

My model what to do/not - no geoengineering - no tech (e.g. nuclear) that burdens future generations - rapid carbon phase-out - reduce population - solar/wind - simplify lifestyles

(de-lurks) Geoengineering is my litmus test to see how loony a given commentator is. There is no way humans can forecast or control the consequences of that. I’d say the same for nuclear except the time to say it was 1946. Now we’re stuck with the consequences.

there's loony geo-engineering (pumping particulates into the atmosphere) and there's practical geo-engineering (carbon sequestration via reforestation). the practical ones are probably still worth doing even though they're not fast enough to reverse the damage.

Ocean seeding also seems like a pretty terrible idea (in terms of outcome if mishandled).

I wouldn’t call reforestation actually geoengineering since we are returning to a well-known state (forests). HOWEVER, you’re trying to hoover up Paleozoic carbon that was underground 100 years ago and turn it into trees with a nasty tendency to die and rot. Mass balance is wrong

forests in equilibrium stage are carbon neutral, because trees die and rot. sequestration is achieved by reforesting denuded land. more acreage of trees means more living trees, more captured carbon. it's not enough to stop the warming. it's still a good idea anyway.
