I would argue that using a fixed, received definition is actually distorting the results. the objective of the survey is to get at how people feel about whatever their own idea of the thing is. revealing the negative connotations that exist around the term is exactly the point.

priming the respondents with a neutral or even positive coded definition as in the 2016 ANES is a much less useful and less interesting result. it tells us nothing about how people construct the concept in their own heads.
