expression carries risk with it. others might not agree with you, or might not approve of your form of expression. signaling is intended (though people do make mistakes) to be without risk. it's an attempt to join yourself with the collective group mind.

I don't know about that. My Twitter feed seems to be reflexively 'anti-pc'. To a fault.

then you're not virtue signaling. you're just expressing yourself.

no. you linked the distinction to whether or not you believe in the virtue. I'm saying your state of agreement with the virtue is not relevant.

I think we are having two different conversations. One is what exactly is virtue signalling. The other is the fact that we live in society and our expression has consequences that we should be sensitive to. I don't think we really disagree.

I think we do disagree because inauthentic beliefs, so-called "preference falsification", is incredibly common and closely related to virtue signaling behavior. if all expressions of belief were authentic we would agree. that is not the world we live in.

so a virtue signal can be authentically believed, or it can be falsified belief. doesn't matter either way. it's the signaling act that is driving the behavior not the underlying belief.

Don't think this is totally accurate. If you try your best not to signal things unless you believe them, than that will change the frequency of the signalling act.

I think that's naive and there are huge numbers of people that are deeply Machiavellian and make their decisions about what to communicate socially based entirely on expected social rewards.

I'm not saying they _should_ behave that way, just that they do, and given that they do and we know that they do, we should account for communication acts appropriately.

I'd rather be naive and keep working towards addressing cognitive biases than be cynical and suggest that we cannot speak out for/against our beliefs.

not the first time I've been called cynical. I'm not, actually, but I am realistic. you can say anything you want. nobody is stopping you. what end does it serve? what is achieved? how will your truth interact with someone elses' lies?

I choose who I speak to very carefully. I'm speaking to you now because I believe you to be a thoughtful and intelligent person who might learn from my perspective, and might share a perspective I can learn from. in general that isn't my expectation.
