What are good 20th century examples of places that went from high personal freedom/liberal to low personal freedom/illiberal? Iran in 1979 is the main one I can think of. Others?
Freedom is factional in most societies, not universal. How would you measure loss of freedom, and for whom? Every time a new law is passed somebody is losing a freedom of some kind. Every time a policeman stops a civilian somebody is losing a freedom of some kind.

So some countries become police states very rapidly, like Iran. Other countries become police states over the course of 100 years. Richard Nixon declared "War on Drugs" in 1970. There were global consequences to that decision.
