Google returned a contemporary series called The Vorrh which sounds pretty fuckin cool. I’ve thought about this since I was little so I might actually check it out

i bought The Vorrh a couple of years ago, read in about 150 pages and then got bored and put it down. Not rubbish but quite the slow roll and I had other books on my stack I was eager to get to.

have you read LeGuin's The Word for World is Forest? that might scratch your itch with a much shorter and more briskly paced book
