Sit in on a professional programmer unfamiliar with teaching trying to teach git to a student. It's not pretty. "It's simple!" followed by an hour(s) of exasperation at how many things they had just memorized to get along.

i've done my fair share of git crash courses for noobies. i've found, the hard way, that the only effective teaching method for first timers is to give them a magical invocation to use without explaining what its really doing. if they care enough they'll learn more later.
