facebook is well within its rights to fire him for going off the reservation, if that's what happened. no argument from me on that point. i'm objecting to fuckin Matt Y deciding that's he's the Judge Dredd of American discourse.

"you have to fire him" != "if you don't fire him any claim that he 'went off the reservation' will ring hollow"

they could also clear it up by releasing a statement saying "Mr. X appeared in a personal capacity only and was not representing FB at the time"

whether or not he _should_ be allowed to do that while in his current role at FB is another subject but I'm just not buying the reasoning that the only options a company has w.r.t an employee acting as an individual is firing them or endorsing them

'an employee' != 'a VP-level employee specifically paid to engage in politics'. It's not like this is a case of some downtrodden call center worker getting stomped for liking something on facebook, or whatever

he's still an employee. i'll just repeat myself. FB can (and possibly should) fire him. regardless, that is NOT up to Yglesias and I'm continuing to be pissed at Yglesias for being an asshole.

not sure what exactly you want here - a (socially enforced, not state) ban on discussion of the thing by Y? I get that you don't like him, but I don't particularly care about him either way and nothing in his tweet seems not valid or impermissible or whatever.

he's free to say what he wants and i'm free to call him an asshole

what I would like is for several million more people to agree with me that Yglesias is an asshole

you know the thing you're doing, where instead of discussing the issue I was hoping to talk about you went all-in on how much you hate someone tangentially involved in it? It's like bringing your object-level opinions into a meta level discussion, but so so much worse.

sorry, guess we're done then. parting remark: the general principle is that Yglesias is deliberately poisoning the well and this has larger consequences than one FB employed lobbyist.
