I can think of all kinds of folk psychological explanations for the OKC data but I don't even want to say them out loud.
If we assume (big assumption) that the assessments are somehow accurate, I feel like it could be reasonably explained by the fact that straight men don’t feel as much pressure to work on their appearance. Gay men have interesting perspective on this
S A D tho you know being sexy for your partner is Virtue smh and obviously it bears fruit!
why are straight men not universally obsessed with their appearances this is our greatest Sin i actually am pretty irritated about this
Because working on your appearance is breaking the picket line. It makes every other man's life a little harder.
Note that men rate women on OKC with a somewhat normal distribution. The shift in the distribution of men rated by women seems to indicate that women would prefer to pick their mates from the top 30% of men, and perceive the hapless majority as the left tail of the distribution?
yes I noticed that too. maybe this is just my male perspective, but my baseline expectation was that it would be a normal distribution. i'm surprised that there is such a large gender divergence here.
the female ratings of men kinda looks like a log-normal distribution actually. I'm not much of a statistician. where else do we see things like that in human behavior? the only one I can think of off-hand is that user engagement (time on page) of web content is log-normal.
