Off my otherwise-continuous coffee binge (we ran out of coffee, and the stores are closed). Immediately started drinking yerba mate instead. Much more pleasant. Scarcely any nasty side-effects, compared with coffee. May end up switching over full time.
have you tried Guayusa tea? Also has high caffeine level (comparable to mate I think) and personally I think it tastes a bit better.

Maybe you already know this, but the taste of yerba mate is very dependent on how you prepare it. I used to only drink crappy, overly bitter yerba until the wife figured out how to brew it better. No, haven't tried that. Used to chew ginseng, but it's annoying to get a hold of.

yes, i've had some really well done mate (from a shop) that was nice. i haven't quite found the trick to it and my home batches come out too bitter. guayusa is much easier to prepare. just ordinary tea brewing, very hard to make it too bitter.

Mainly about the temperature. You want it around 75 degrees celsius if you pour it like regular tea. Or just put it in a french press and leave it for 5 minutes. That's what I did today. I'll see if I can get a hold of guayusa. Sounds fun.
