I'm less upset by the pauldrons than I am about the design work around chainswords and bolters

40K always looks like it was character designed by Blizzard, and vice-versa

Starcraft is a self-conscious "borrowing" from 40K. it maps almost 1:1 Eldar => Protoss, Spehz Marunz => Terran, Tyrannid => Zerg 40K is a self-conscious mashup of several dozen popular pulp sf/f tropes that have emerged since about the 1970s.

I recognize this is true, but I just mean to say—there's little reason for the massive shoulder pads aesthetic in Warcraft and their other franchises. It seems like it's become a Blizzard trope in addition to a tribute

yeah, they did it out of tribute originally and then it became iconic and gained trope status and they retroactively applied it to all of their shit, especially World of Warcraft. the exaggerated armor stuff wasn't really present in Warcraft 3 (and earlier).
