let me tell you about my city: the reason it's called "the city that never sleeps" is because the noise pollution is so severe everyone is awakened under hostile conditions 3 or 4 times a night.

the reason it's called "the big apple" is because it's got a poisonous core and attracts vermin

the reason they say "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere" is because every single motherfucker in this town is out to get you one way or another and a few years living here will wrap you in impenetrable psychic armor

I don't travel as much as I'd like to. Last time I was out of town for more than a few days I was visiting Edinburgh for a couple of weeks. I felt disoriented because even the busy streets in New Town were too quiet. No relentless din of sirens and jackhammers all day.

yes, a lot of us are constantly sick. psychotherapy is a cottage industry here. personally the only way I can manage is by living in a very nice quiet neighborhood in a nice quiet apartment on a nice quiet block. it's tolerable as long as I have my sanctuary to retreat to.
