the reason it's called "the big apple" is because it's got a poisonous core and attracts vermin
the reason they say "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere" is because every single motherfucker in this town is out to get you one way or another and a few years living here will wrap you in impenetrable psychic armor
seriously I gotta get out of here
I don't travel as much as I'd like to. Last time I was out of town for more than a few days I was visiting Edinburgh for a couple of weeks. I felt disoriented because even the busy streets in New Town were too quiet. No relentless din of sirens and jackhammers all day.
New York is so loud the concrete itself is thrumming
you know i always took "the city that never sleeps" to be a nice thing, like oh wow i can go buy pizza at 3am. yeah but people only do that if they can't sleep lol
Damn. Tbh it sounds like my life in London but in my case it would be fixed if I just lived on a quieter street (thank god these exist)
well I've not visited either of those cities but I'm not surprised. the problem is the culture itself, it's compounded by the population density but that isn't the root cause. less pathological cultures can operate at high density without these issues.
otoh I bet Singapore and Tokyo don't have immigrants from 65 countries living in them.
New York is a schizophrenic overmind because of this. We manage to get by somehow (with problems) but the lack of coherence of culture and purpose is vivid.
