acceleration of existing impulses for social conformity and group identity formation. I think all forms of mass media do this, and participatory social media especially. it's not a foregone conclusion. not everyone does this. it's possible to just, well, not believe the lies.

more curious is how many people believe they will be rewarded for their conformity signaling despite the fact that there is no evidence for that at all besides imaginary internet points.
