Do kids really read fiction and think "this doesn't speak to me because this character does not share my superficial demographic characteristics"? Or is it purely a pose? It is a foreign mode of thought. I didn't read fiction to find surface similarities, but to escape.

the problems are much more in sphere of The Discourse about this topic rather than the works themselves. The thing we object to is the media critic saying "everything is problematic" and then scolding existing fan communities for not being woke enough.
