What other reasons? This rings true to me from work helping an organisation counteract reputation trolling. It takes a few seconds for trolls to make shit up and spread rhumours and lies, many hours and days to carefully research and evidence accuracy.
is it even worth the time to respond to trolls like that? During the 2016 U.S. Election the Hillary Clinton campaign was running a similar kind of "set the record straight" operation. The people who believe the troll rumors don't read the evidence disproving the rumors.

“Don’t feed the trolls” is an excellent response - not the same as addressing fabrications publicly.

Depends on the circumstances I think. Reputation matters a lot for NGOs and businesses alike. A small company can be ruined even by a handful of opportunist, malicious individuals making stuff up on sm, if not addressed. Reputation management is a costly, thriving industry.
