I gave a talk on this to some smart high school students. Their main objection was not wanting those who seem to insurers more likely to commit crimes to have to pay higher crime insurance premiums.https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1025853613611122688 …

Drivers must convince us, in part via accident liability insurance, that we can trust them on road. Similarly, folks should convince us via crime insurance that can trust them in our stores & parks. If they can't afford this, maybe we can't trust them. http://www.overcomingbias.com/2018/01/privately-enforced-punished-crime.html …

Did you specify which variables you would admit for determining who's more likely to commit crimes? Think of race, some distant uncle who committed murder, … Where to draw the line? Gender is socially accepted (car insurance), race off-limits and family circumstances dystopian.

If the insurance market is competitive, I don't mind them using any clues to risk that they see as informative.

So do you think free markets would result in "fair" premiums for, say, >90% of the population? If so, does your definition of fair (in this context) simply happen to be whatever free markets would determine?

Yes, that would be fair by me for most. But as I've said, my proposal is compatible with many ways one could subsidize or tax insurance premiums for favored or disfavored groups.

Interesting. Just out of sheer curiosity, do you have an opinion on the Chinese social credit system? Or other real-world implementations (parts of which) resemble sth like your proposal.

You know that we have a credit rating system here in the US, right? Seems better than not having such a system, though a more competitive system might be even better.

My ignorance about the US runs deeper than I'd like to admit. I didn't know whether US systems had access to criminal records, social media, preferred newspapers, family, etc., so I chose an example that uses as many "controversial" variables as possible.

U.S. credit rating is entirely financial, the Chinese social credit rating includes many non-financial signals.

I'm okay with most any clues being used by competitive orgs who must estimate risks because they are at risk. What is the best argument somewhere that some clues should not be considered?

People should be allowed to make social mistakes, otherwise you’ll have no biodiversity in your culture?
