Communism is fueled by ressentiment, capitalism is fueled by envy. In a free market, it's possible to choose happiness & success, and create value in a positive sum game if you aren't envious or resentful. Most fail to practice this, because they're consumed by mimetic rivalry.https://twitter.com/MimeticValue/status/1030350663383797760 …

Success is being neither resentful nor envious of anyone.

The advantage capitalism has over communism is that it's possible to find a personal solution that leads to satisfaction so that you can avoid dealing with the envy and resentment of others, but in communism, you're trapped inside the politics of the collective.

communism is inherently totalitarian. capitalism doesn't have to be but in practice it often is nearly totalitarian for a large proportion of the people participating in the system.

I think the possibility of infinite social mobility is available to everyone (look at Oprah), but it's not easy to accomplish and most people don't have the positive mindset to make it happen. Much of totalitarianism is people oppressing themselves through a defeatist mindset.

social/economic mobility within the system is orthogonal to whether or not the system feels totalitarian from the inside. for a system to be not totalitarian it must permit alternatives to itself to exist alongside itself and it must permit exit for those who desire it.

There's always a choice to not allow the system define your experience. That's why I bring up the movie "Life is Beautiful" and @martyrmade's essay. No matter what material situation you're in, there's a choice to not allow others to break your spirit.http://www.martyrmade.com/life-is-a-disaster-life-is-so-beautiful/ …
