Modern art is about prestige. Same for architecture. You display maximum prestige if you are outwardly incompetent at your job, but still get the social credit of a maestro. Particularly as skills are rare, over time empty prestige signals crowd out expertise:https://twitter.com/wrathofgnon/status/1028614120411521026 …

If you can't draw you have no business being an architect. Let's have a look at representative sketches of famous architects. First the moderns. All awful. Gropius' fixated with flows (of assault?), Corbu's is infantile. Hadid's is nonsense. But Diller's is the worst: diabolical. pic.twitter.com/jiGsDyH1dF

have spoken to several architecture students about this when I was at CCNY. I was at the engineering school which was housed in the same facility as the architecture school. when the two schools were created architecture did a lot of structural engineering too. 1/n

at some point that began to change and it accelerated very rapidly at some point in the fairly recent past (1980s maybe? unsure) such that architecture students were now acting like and hanging out with artists and joked amongst themselves about their poor grades in... 2/n

...the few remaining required engineering courses in their curiculum. it was a point of pride to get a C in structural engineering 101. the discipline as a whole has become about prestige competition and attracting attention from gigantic institutional investors. 3/n

I'm unsurprised that under these conditions the usability of spaces, or the economic and engineering concerns related to them are sidelined. architectural designs are now like elaborate mating signals from Bower birds. make it flashy, attract the $$$ 4/finpic.twitter.com/nOR6og8I0F

Wow. Thank you for sharing. This is a crying shame. It would be a lot easier to get behind the yuuge vertical buildings neoliberal program, which I tend to favor, if we had a pipeline of beautiful buildings waiting to be built.

No reason the hive-city arcologies have to be ugly, unlivable, brutalist hellscapes.
