IMO it's easier to defend because there is no strong notion of public health (i.e. a thing that the country should invest in for the good of the country) but there is a notion of national defence, American interests, etc

True, but! I think these same policies will be enacted even under progressive control. Our wars (Iraq, Syria, and Iran) are based on the bible. We're destroying Babylon, Damascus, and Persia because of prophecy. And the dems went along with them.
