it was one of the nicer parts of my childhood. housing development built on back lots of what had been a commercial orchard. there was still an operating orchard down the block from me, though downscaled and touristy now, and we used to sneak into it through the woods.

anyway they had a bunch of varieties include Empire apples which were uniformly terrible just like the McIntosh stock they came from. Gala apples always a good bet. There were feral trees growing on unused land and apples don't breed true. Fun fruit gambling.

gala apples are small and plain looking but have got what it counts on the inside. this is my spirit apple.
