So the obvious question is why have we played ball with them for 85 years? Oil is the obvious answer, and certainly a piece of the puzzle, but what other incentives are there that statesmen know about and the average public don’t?https://twitter.com/thewargarurumon/status/1027561920017182721 …

they aligned with us against the Russians when that was the relevant geopolitical axis. this is still in play insofar as the West is still having a cold war with Iran.

Saudi Arabia's primary interest is their unending sectarian warfare against the Shias. this is why they supported us as we demolished Iraq (the largest Shia population outside of Iran). this is why they begrudgingly align with Israel and the U.S. as long as we aim at Iran.

you must question "why do we still do this? why do we care about Iran?" and honestly it's hard to come up with good answers. there is a lot of cold war inertia and unsettled grudges so much of it is irrational. lobbying from Israeli interests as well.

Iran has continued to be significantly hostile in its rhetoric (not without reasons, but still) so it's easy to keep the cold war going. cold wars are good for the military-industrial complex as well so there are interested parties in keeping the hostilities going.

one of the stated reasons why Al Qaeda attacked the U.S. was specifically because we put military assets in Saudi Arabia. there are serious backlash consequences to this alliance and we have since relocated those bases to other locations.
