the highly compressed version, though, is that Ayahuasca tourism is legitimately a form of cultural appropriation (as opposed to the numerous bullshit examples that get media heat) and also that Norteamericanos who go do it are doing at as a form of self-flagellation.

I think it is actually very effective for some people but that is orthogonal to m criticism.

and it's a counter-factual so almost impossible to meaningfully investigate, but I think probably the same people who find Ayahuasca retreats effective would find Western culture native forms of psychedelic therapy to be even better, except it's fucking illegal here.
