I don't think I agree with this at all. Vash tries to keep people away because being around him makes them a target. But, those who get to know him end up enjoying his company -- he's good-hearted and personable. Then, they get irritated by his martyr behavior.

Knives externalizes, Vash internalizes. The synthesis lay between the two of them, but they repel and cannot see it.

I'm pretty sure Wolfwood is the synthesis. Like Knives, his moral system is based on killing predators in order to protect a designated victim class (children instead of plants). But, like Vash, he comes to believe that he can minimize death on both sides.
