i.e. the simple fact that we have common spaces and shared culture does not necessarily mean that any acts done in those common spaces are political acts and that any/all culture is necessarily political. I think it's harmful to explicitly politicize "being" itself in this way.

obviously I'm not a continental leftist, so disagreement here is expected and it's ok. thanks for sharing this perspective. learned something new!
-
Agreed: disagreement here is expected (it was an act of disagreement that opened this exchange from my side :) ). Thank you for your thoughts as well!

I recognize that the concerns you raise are valid and important. I don't think they are adequate characterizations of what I'm after here, but I definitely see how they are consistent with what I've said so far. I'll think carefully on this.

I think I can see where you're coming from. Where you see "politicization of the common sphere of life" I see "politics that suppress/ignores the common sphere of life".
-
I agree that there is an implicit politics in most things. I believe it is better to leave it implicit most of the time. Making it explicit leads to a miserable circumstance of everyone splitting into tribes and constantly testing the loyalty and purity of their groups.
-
Ah yes. I can easily see how constant attention to the political dimensions of every day life could be factious! In fact, I think (I hope!) this factiousness can be shown to stem from a stance which "insufficiently left" (on the view I'm suggesting).
-
If we take our being in common as inescapable, & grant as axiomatic that we must share & communicate in order to be at all, then our politics should include figuring out how to support & protect this! If it doctrinal commitments degrade this basis, we're doing it wrong!
-
But I know I may sound totalzing and like an absolutist, and I don't want to be that. I'll take time to think through our exchange. Thanks again!
