soft drugs: caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, weed medium drugs: MDMA, cocaine, shrooms, DXM hard drugs: everything else not necessarily logical but I think that's how it's generally perceived, at least in my area

Alcohol is incredibly toxic and incredibly harmful to people in relationships with heavy drinkers. Weed isn't. Nicotine is long term risk factor but short term essentially harmless. All labeled "soft" for nonsense reasons like relative cultural acceptance level.
