.@hikikomorphism in case you were wondering, im fully sold on Torment now as a result of completing the dialogue where i take a society-ender level memetic hazard into my "mind palace" to hide it away safely. any other recommendations?

Have you read anything by China Mieville? I'd say start with The Scar or Kraken, depending on if you want an ancient or modern setting.

i haven't. the first book in the same series as "The Scar" will be here in about two weeks though! hopefully i'll have plowed through some of my comic backlog by then...

Ok, so I liked Perdido St Station but there's a reason I don't recommend it to start. It's kinda meandering, bit of purple prose, but if you like it you'll definitely like his other stuff.

gonna second this recommendation. it's a great book. The Scar is a really good follow-up too. my favorite China Mieville is Embassytown though. spectacular book on so many levels and much more mature in writing style as well.
