Like, I get it, Xavier's kit is totally OP and the easiest way to balance it is to give him the idiot ball. But it doesn't make for satisfying stories.

it's bad writing. there was a lot of that in New X-Men. one of Morrison's weakest runs in his whole ouvre imo. Xavier's whole shtick is working with mutants to train them to control their powers and mitigate risk. Would have been interesting to write about that w.r.t himself.

I feel like at his power level, after a certain number of catastrophic mind-control/insanity events, just offing himself ASAP seems like the right risk-mitigation move. The X-Men do fine without him. But of course Marvel would never have the balls.
