"Illegal immigration" is a good concept to use to explore the multi-layered fuckery that is our reality, First of all, what is a law? a law is a rule that people invent and enforce. without enforcement, it's just words on paper. Now... let's talk about the history of Americapic.twitter.com/CrRRiqnPVY

For ~30,000 years, you could literally walk from Russia to Alaska. About ~16,000 years ago, small groups of hunter-gathers chased big animals across the Bering bridge. They lived in that in-between space for 1000s of years! Land ownership as a concept had not been invented yet.pic.twitter.com/qaMvuBHoY0

There have been many names for this land – some tribes called it Turtle Island. Other names include "Abya Yala", "Ixachilan". (The World Turtle is a fascinating creation myth to me. Hindu and Chinese myths have this motif too!) How did these people govern themselves?pic.twitter.com/FedQP2S86t

They were people, like we are, and they were just as capable of being cruel and unjust. And they varied tremendously from tribe to tribe. But broadly – crimes were against communities, and there weren't really jails or prisons. (This is SO complex though) https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/3n0u88/what_sort_of_criminal_law_did_native_american/ …pic.twitter.com/X0hN0KkbHq

Consider one origin story of Thanksgiving. A bunch of (illegal? 🧐) immigrants on a boat showed up on Turtle Island, uninvited, without enough food to last the winter. A local man (who knew English because he’d been KIDNAPPED earlier) taught them how to survive. And they feasted.pic.twitter.com/nRUnxWeRwO

the current misdeeds are not going unnoticed but there is limited ability to resist the legal exercise of power from a sitting president. how bad does it have to be before violence is a better option than elections? we're not even close that yet.
